7/30/2012

We will be having a group work morning at the Alamo Heights Community Garden this Saturday, August 4 at 9:00 a.m.  Our main project will be planting fall tomatoes.  We are asking for every adult to bring 1 tomato plant and a bag of compost/mulch as described below.  If you can’t come but want to contribute please make a donation to the City of Alamo Heights designated for the garden or leave a well watered tomato plant and bag of compost behind the shed on Friday or early Saturday.

Calvin Finch suggests determinate varieties of tomatoes for fall.  Buy a large plant ($3-$5 size, one plant per adult) from the following varieties.
Tycoon
Phoenix
Solar Fire
Sunpride
Heat wave
444
Celebrity

Also each family should bring a 40 pound bag of Gardenville compost/mulch.

These items should be available at the following nurseries.
Shades of Green on Sunset
Schultz Nursery on Broadway
Arbolito's on San Pedro

Work Evening - July 23

7/24/2012

Yesterday evening 4 of us worked in the garden for a couple of hours. We pulled out many plants that were past their prime including tomatoes, cucumbers, squash, leeks, and corn. We planted some winter squash seeds in a bed where a "volunteer" summer squash was growing. We also mowed around the beds and watered some of the beds that aren't on the drip irrigation system. A few people accomplished a lot but there's always more work to do. We will be having another group work time on Saturday, August 4 at 9:00 a.m. to plant some tomatoes and other things for fall harvest. We will send details later as to what plants and other supplies you will need to bring.

Garden Update

7/1/2012

About 10 people braved the heat on Monday and Thursday nights to spruce up the garden.  Among other things, we weeded and mowed around the beds and fruit trees, weeded the gravel path, cut scrub vegetation and overhanging branches of trees near the compost bin, and watered the fruit trees and beds.  All of our hard work was to make the garden look extra nice for our special event Movie in the Garden - “A Lot in Common” coming up on Thursday, July 12 at 8:30 p.m.  Details are on the calendar page of our web site, www.ahgarden.org.

In addition to our group work times, the garden needs routine maintenance.  If you usually work in the garden on a certain day/time please let me know and I will post it on the calendar page of the web site.  That way people who want to work with someone else and new volunteers who want to find out what needs to be done will know when someone is likely to be there.

Finally, if you no longer want to receive these updates, please reply and I will remove your name from our mailing list.  I have taken over from Gregg Chislett the duties of updating the web site and sending e-mails.  Thanks to him and his wife Ruth for all of their hard work doing these tasks for more than a year.
