Weekly Garden Update

It was a beautiful weekend and the warm weather is perfect for our garden.  If you have not had the chance to stop by, the fruit trees are blooming and we planted our first tomato plants.  We replanted in some of the beds where the cold weather froze the seedlings.  The drip irrigation system was ordered and should arrive this week.  I also attended a great class on growing vegetables at Shades of Green.  Some of the things I learned are:

-       Organic Ant Killer – Mix compost tea, orange oil and molasses to take care of your ant problems
-       Indeterminate Tomatoes will produce fruit all season, mostly the small cherry or Juliet varieties
-       Cornmeal is good to control fungus
-       It is good to sprinkle Epson salt around the base of the tomato plants to control bugs
-       Not all bugs are bad

-       Recommended Reading – “Texas Organic Garden” and “Texas Bug Book”

Upcoming Events:

14 March – The Community Garden Shed will be presented at the City Council meeting, which starts at 5:30.  The Architectural Review Board approved the shed, but the Council requested that it be presented at the 14 March meeting.  Please attend to support our garden.
